What causes worn teeth?
Main caused of tooth surface loss are acid (erosion) and grinding (attrition) , with acid erosion being the most common.
Acid can dissolve enamel and dentin when in contact with teeth. Sources of acid are either from acidic food and drinks ( such as soda, citrus juices, carbonated drinks and sport drinks) or from digestion ( in patients with acid reflux).
What does a worn tooth look like?
Tooth can look yellowish if has dentin exposure, and usually has a shiny surface. Often chewing surface of back teeth become flat and show small holes called cupped out cavities due to enamel collapse
Also, teeth become shorter and/or thinner.
Is tooth worn painful?

Can worn dentition be treated?
Different treatment options are available depends on severity and number of teeth are affected.
Your restorative dentist can find the best solution with minimum damage to the teeth structure, which can be done with direct bonding to teeth or teeth layer of porcelain with minimum or no grinding of teeth, to replace missing tooth structure as well as reopening the bite which has lost due to wear.
New teeth size and shape are planned on a articulator with a wax up or digitally and your restorative dentist can try them on your teeth before ordering them and design your smile.
Can I prevent or stop tooth wear?
Yes. Prevention is the best approach. Try to avoid acidic and carbonated drinks.
If you get bloated after food or have acid reflux talk to your GP to find a solution.
if you grind your teeth at night ( bruxism) or clench during the day, get advise from your dentist. If necessary, dentist can provide you with a night guard to protect your teeth and TMJ.
What happens if I do not treat my worn teeth?
As dentin is much softer than enamel, whilst it’s exposed , tooth surface loss progress quicker and leads to a more damage and possibly sensitivity. Also, due to shortening of teeth size and collapsing bite, lower jaw joints ( TMJ) can get affected. Also, it affects the smile and patients find it cosmetically unacceptable.
How much does veneers cost?
A direct composite bonding can be £200-400. However, porcelain veneers and overlays cost between £700-1000.
How long treatment last?
With a good care and maintenance treatment can last 5-15 years.
